Glucosamine
Glucosamine is found in high concentrations in the joints. It has been theorized
that glucosamine stimulates the formation of cartilage that is essential for
joint repair. In animal models, oral glucosamine sulfate has a beneficial effect
on inflammation, mechanical arthritis, and immunological-reactive arthritis.
Glucosamine is primarily used to treat osteoarthritis. Research indicates that
glucosamine is as effective as low doses of non steroidal anti-inflammatories
such as ibuprofen. It appears to relieve pain and improve movement. It also
slows the progression of the disease and protect joints from further damage. In
some studies, x-rays have shown that glucosamine prevents progressive damage to
the joints.
Glucosamine appears to be safe for people and many animals. Glucosamine is
sometimes used in combination with chondroitin sulfate as a treatment for
arthritis.

Chondroitin
Chondroitin sulfate is also found in cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate reportedly
maintains the viscosity in joints, stimulates cartilage repair mechanisms, and
inhibits enzymes that break down cartilage
Chondroitin sulfate exists naturally in your cartilage. It's thought to
draw fluid into the tissue to give our cartilage more elasticity and to slow
cartilage breakdown by protecting it from destructive enzymes. As a supplement,
it is exclusively derived from cattle sources and is often taken along with
Glucosamine to assist with maintaining joint health. The combined use is known
to produce a "synergistic" effect. It's been prescribed for pain relief
in osteoarthritis in some parts of Europe where it is a prescription drug for
decades. If glucosamine is your #1 joint friend, chondroitin is #2.
Although Chondroitin alone hasn't been proven to help with or reverse cartilage
loss, in some studies it appeared to help improve function and ease pain. In one
placebo-controlled study, joint narrowing in the knee became stabilized in
patients who were put on Chondroitin supplement. Another controlled
study looked at osteoarthritis of the finger joints for a period of three years.
Among the group that took chondroitin, there was a significant decrease in the
number of patients with new erosions in their finger joints.
Chondroitin in fact is a glycosaminoglycan (think long chains of glucosamine)
that is concentrated in joint cartilage. Like glucosamine, chondroitin helps
produce substances needed for the formation of connective tissue. In addition
chondroitin (unlike glucosamine) may also have the ability to protect existing
cartilage from prematurely breaking down by inhibiting cartilage-destroying
enzymes.

How Does Chondroitin Work?
Chondroitin sulfates provide the structural components of joint cartilage,
inhibit some free radical enzymes that degrade joint cartilage and collagen, and
facilitate the entry of glucosamine into the joints. Like glucosamine,
chondroitin sulfate attracts water into the cartilage matrix and stimulates the
production of cartilage. It also appears to have the ability to prevent enzymes
from dissolving cartilage. Recent studies have shown extremely good results from
long-term use of chondroitin sulfate (alone and in combination with glucosamine)
in increasing range of motion and overall joint health. Both glucosamine and
chondroitin should be used together, however, to produce the best results.
Many animals that have hip dysplasia benefit from being on glucosamine and
chondroitin because it helps heal the cartilage and reduce the pain involved
with this disease

Type II Collagen
Patients suffering from arthritis, experience a selective destruction of
collagen type II in the cartilage within their joints. Type II collagen is the
major protein found in cartilage. It as the "glue" that holds together the
cartilage and it helps provide elasticity within the joints. In addition,
cartilage is able to heal itself because of the mucopolysaccharides are
contained in Type II collagen.
Recent clinical trials involving patients with severe, active rheumatoid
arthritis showed a decrease in the number of swollen joints and tender joints
among subjects using type II collagen for 3 months. Type II collagen is non
toxic and considered a safe alternative to NSAIDS.
Collagen type II also contains proteoglycans that inhibit blood vessel formation
in joints and reduce enzyme attacks on the cartilage itself. Thus, there is a
rejuvenation of the cartilage producing cells and a decrease in the destructive
biochemistry of the joint. Additionally, many of these proteoglycans found in
collagen type II support the lubricating fluid of the joint called the synovial

Perna Canaliculus
Perna contains a natural mineral balance. It is made up of 61% protein, 13%
carbohydrates, 12% glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), 5% lipids (including
eicosatetraenoic acids, or ETAs), 5% minerals, and 4% water. Perna mussel also
contains glucosamine, a GAG precursor and one of the building blocks of
cartilage. Glucosamine, GAGs (unbranched chains of complex sugars) and ETAs (a
type of Omega-3 fatty acids) are the compounds in the mussel believed to
contribute to its beneficial effects. ETAs are the key ingredients that help in
the anti-inflammatory activity and thereby the reduction of joint pain. GAGs are
the main components of cartilage and the synovial fluid found in joints.
GAGs increase the lubrication of the joint and increase water uptake into the
cartilage. This water uptake, which decreases with age, is necessary for the
lubrication and shock absorption of the joints. There are nine classes of GAGs,
five of which are related to connective tissue. Two of these five are
chondroitins, which make up the basic substance of both bone and cartilage. GAGs
provide flexibility, elasticity, and strength to cartilage.
Published reports are consistent in their findings that Perna mussel produces an
anti-inflammatory response. A Clemson University study found that Perna was
effective in reducing the onset of rheumatoid arthritis as well as reversing it
in mice and rats. Out of eighteen test animals with arthritis that were fed
Perna mussel, only three developed arthritis compared to 10 out of 15 in the
control group. Another study found that the green-lipped mussel was effective in
reducing pain, swelling, and stiffness in 60 human patients with rheumatoid
arthritis and osteoarthritis. A French study using 53 patients suffering from
osteoarthritis in the knee reported that the Perna extract was "well tolerated
by the participants with no adverse conditions reported."
Ongoing research in both humans and animals continue to show that the use of
green-lipped mussel is, when used as directed, an effective supplement for the
management of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Perna mussel has been
successful in managing degenerative joint diseases and arthritis in both human
and veterinary health fields: it contains natural anti-inflammatory agents and
many essential building blocks needed to rebuild the necessary components in
joints. It also is reported to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation
associated with arthritis and improve joint mobility.

Yucca
The primary medical use of yucca is to treat arthritis and joint pain and
inflammation. Native Americans used sap from the leaves in poultices or baths to
treat skin lesions, sprains, inflammation, and bleeding. Constituents of the
yucca are used today to treat people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis . The plant's medical properties are found in saponins, precursors of
cortisone, which prevent the release of toxins from the intestines that restrict
normal cartilage formation. Saponins are produced naturally in the body by the
adrenal glands. It is believed yucca works best for arthritis when taken over an
extended period of time.


S.O.D. or superoxide dismutase, is the general name given to a class of enzymes
which make up an important antioxidant system in the body. They neutralize free
radicals (harmful by products of cellular respiration), particularly the
superoxide radical the most common free radical in the body.
The enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide
into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. As such, it is an important antioxidant
defense in nearly all cells exposed to oxygen.
Superoxide is one of the main reactive oxygen species in the cell and as such,
SOD serves a key antioxidant role. SOD is an enzyme widely distributed in the
body, which destroys superoxide radicals. These free radicals have been linked
with cancer and degenerative diseases. Some believe that they have insufficient
SOD to deal with the large amounts of free radicals and consequently, take
supplements of SOD to protect the body against the adverse effects of the
radicals.

approximately 1/4 ounce twice weekly to start for ages 1-2 yrs. 
1/2 ounce two - three times week from ages 2-4 yrs.  1/2 - 3/4 ounce three times week from ages 4-6 yrs.
1/2 - 1 ounce three - four times weekly from ages 6-9 yrs. 3/4 - 1 ounce daily from ages 9 to infinity! 

I have been extremely blessed over the last 36 years not to have lost a great dane under the age of 10 1/2 yrs old
and several have lived to be over 12 - 13 yrs.  I have never had to make the decision to help my danes cross over, they have all passed on naturally of old age and all have had mobility right up until they left this earth. I have truly been blessed in this regard.

My standard poodles (medium breeds) recieve, on average, approximately 1/4 ounce weekly starting at age 2 yrs. 1/4 ounce
twice weekly from ages 3-5. 1/2 ounce twice weekly from ages 5-6. 1/2 ounce three times weekly from 6-8.
1/2 ounce 4 times weekly from age 8-10.  I now feed 1/2 ounce daily after age 10, which Honey and my Nina
turned in May and June of 2008. 
Small breeds over the age of 5 yrs., I start with 1/8 to 1/4 ounce twice week from 5-7,  1/4 ounce two - three times
week from 7-9, 1/4 ounce every other day to daily, depending on needs of individual,  from 10 yrs to infinity!
My dachshund, BB, adopted at 12 yrs old (owner told me her age) lived to be over 20 yrs old. What a joy!
